Man detained in Sochi on suspicion of bicycle theft turned out to be internationally wanted foreigner

The Duty Unit of the Administration of Internal Affairs for Sochi received information that a bicycle had been stolen from a local resident near a hypermarket in the resort city. As a result of the investigation and search measures implemented in that regard, policemen detained the suspected perpetrator. That is a 54-year old resident of a near-abroad country: policemen searched the man and seized the stolen bicycle from him.

The Investigation Administration of the Administration of Internal Affairs for Sochi initiated a criminal case against the man based on essential elements of a crime stipulated by Part 2 Article 158 “Theft” of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Restraint in the form of written undertaking not to leave and to behave properly was imposed on the suspect.

“In the course of the investigation, policemen found out that the suspect had been put on the internationally wanted list by the General Police Inspectorate of the MIA of the Republic of Moldova for perpetration of a crime stipulated by Part 2 Article 165 'Human trafficking' of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Moldova,” said Russian MIA official representative Irina Volk.

The Sochi police notified the initiator of the search of that and received information that in spring 2016 the malefactor had fraudulently recruited several countrymen for employment in Russia. When the foreigners had arrived to Sochi, the man had taken away their passports and made them work at a construction site for 12 hours a day without paying salaries.

The detained man was put into a temporary cell. The police are implementing relevant measures to extradite the detained man to the initiator of the international search.
