"Traffic police officers at the inspection of a specialized bus belonging to one of the funeral agencies found and seized half a ton of caviar, presumably sturgeon caviar," - said the MIA official representative Elena Alekseeva.
At the 34th kilometer of the highway Khabarovsk - Komsomolsk-on-Amur, inspectors of the road patrol service of the traffic police of the MIA Administration for the Khabarovsk Territory stopped a car that was moving at a speed significantly exceeding the speed limit.
The inspection showed that the specialized bus "Nissan Civilian" belonged to one of the Khabarovsk firms providing funeral services.
The man who was driving the car explained that he was carrying the body of a dead woman from the Mayak village of the Nanaisky District to Khabarovsk.
During the preparation of the administrative material officers offered the driver to open voluntarily the cabin for inspection. In the bags under the funeral wreaths the inspectors found plastic containers with caviar, supposedly - of sturgeons.
An investigative team was sent to the scene. At the further examination of the bus it was found that there was no body of the deceased in the cabin. But in the coffin the police found containers with caviar sealed in shrink-wrapping.
The total weight of the seized batch was 500 kilograms.
Two employees of the ritual agency were detained. The 31-year-old driver and his 33-year-old partner told the police that they had been approached by an unknown man, who asked them to transport from the Mayak village to one of the Khabarovsk morgues the body of their relative who had died on the previous day. The coffin was loaded into the hearse by persons unknown to them. For the transportation the detainees had been promised 25 thousand rubles.
The seized caviar was transferred for safekeeping. The Inquiry Division of the MIA Division for the Khabarovsky District started a check into the fact. Steps are being taken to establish the persons involved in the illegal extraction and transportation of valuable aquatic biological resources.
