Moscow police detained pseudo-doctor who treated pensioners with buckwheat instead of medicines

“Criminal investigation officers of the MIA of Russia Division for the Northern Tushino District detained a suspect in a series of frauds against elderly residents of Moscow.

It was established that a man who introduced himself as a doctor called an 84-year-old Muscovite's stationary phone. He said that according to the test results, the pensioner had a serious illness and she needed to buy a medicine. Soon, the offender came to her home, and handed over the alleged medicines and explained that the next day a nurse would visit her to provide the treatment scheme. The victim gave him about 400 thousand rubles. The next day, the woman opened the bundle in which she found buckwheat.

A similar case occurred with an 87-year-old resident of the Southern Tushino District, who transferred 100 thousand rubles to a pseudo-doctor and also received a package of buckwheat instead of a medicine.

Criminal investigations into the facts were initiated on the grounds of a crime stipulated by part 3 of Article 159 of the RF Criminal Code. As a result of operational-search measures, the police detained the suspect on the Skhodnenskaya Street in Moscow. Placement to custody was selected by court as the preventive measure for the suspect.

There is reason to believe that the detainee could be involved in other crimes committed against senior citizens. The preliminary criminal investigation is on-going,” said the official representative of the Russian MIA Irina Volk.
