From the autumn of last year, the police of Petrozavodsk began receiving reports from citizens about the theft of their money. Deception began with a phone call on the pensioners’ home phone numbers. The caller presented herself as an employee of the pension system and informed on the reform, under which elderly people were allegedly entitled to a compensation. After that, the pensioner was asked to go to an ATM, where further actions were dictated over the mobile phone. Then the connection was lost and after a while the victims realized that they had lost all the money they had in their accounts.
The amount of damage to victims ranged from 15,000 to 300,000 thousand rubles. Some of the applicants have been saving this money for many years, and have lost it in just minutes.
In the course of operational search activities, officers of the CI Administration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Republic of Karelia identified the designers of the fraudulent scheme. It turned out that the calls came from Moscow, and the Karelian police officers left for the capital. With the power support by special purpose unit of Rosgvardia in Karelia, operatives detained the suspects. They turned out to be citizens of one of the CIS countries aged 44 and 33 (the latter was staying in the territory of Russia illegally).
According to investigators, the women for a long time were engaged in the criminal activity. On working days, at certain hours strictly, they made calls to residents of various regions of the country. For those purposes, they used telephone directories that were available on the Internet. In the autumn of last year, they began calling telephone numbers registered in Petrozavodsk. And in January of this year, their activities were suppressed.
Currently, the suspects are charged with at least 15 episodes of criminal activity, the total damage from which amounted to about 1,000,000 rubles. The amount of damage from criminal episodes in other regions is being established - the materials collected by Karelian operatives will allow their colleagues to reveal similar facts of fraud in the territory of other regions.
Placement to custody was selected as the preventive measure for the suspects.
It is noteworthy that during the search no more than 100,000 rubles were seized from the suspects. As they explained, other people's savings were spent on ensuring the secrecy of activities, including renting of premises, as well as on creating good living conditions for themselves.
