Today, State Secretary - Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation Igor Zubov held a working meeting with the African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security, Smail Chergui.
Opening the meeting, Igor Zubov noted the interest of the African Union in cooperation and the relevance of the experience of the Russian law enforcement bodies in the area of ensuring the security and combating crime.
He said that the Ministry had many years of experience in the field of training officers from law enforcement agencies of African countries in higher and additional professional education programs in educational institutions of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs. They were also trained on an ongoing basis in the Center for training peacekeepers on the basis of MIA All-Russian Advanced Training Institute.
In addition, Igor Zubov drew attention to certain aspects of the anti-drug cooperation of the Russian MIA with law enforcement agencies of African countries. In the period of 2017-2018, the Government of the Russian Federation established measures of control in relation to 62 new narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, of which 18 are prohibited for circulation, including their derivatives, as well as one drug-containing plant. “In order to expand the regulatory framework, on January 4, 2018, the Joint Action Plan of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau on cooperation in combating drug trafficking for the period of 2018-2020 was signed,” he added.
During the discussion, the participants considered the issue of granting the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation the observer status with the AFRIPOL.
The State Secretary - Deputy Minister expressed interest in receiving information regarding foreign militants and terrorists. “In this situation, one of the most important problems is the return of foreign militants and terrorists from the perspective of controlling them and preventing their further extremist and terrorist activities,” the Deputy Minister added.
In conclusion, Igor Zubov thanked Smail Chergui for the open dialogue and invited the colleagues to participate in the St. Petersburg Economic Forum, which will be held from 6 to 8 June 2019 in St. Petersburg and in the V Eastern Economic Forum, which will be held in Vladivostok from 4 to 6 September 2019.
