In Crimea, operatives detained suspects in extortion

Criminal Investigation officers of the MIA of Russia Inter-district Division “Krasnoperekopsky” detained suspects in money extortion from taxi drivers.

According to available information, for several months the offenders extorted money from citizens engaged in private transportation for the opportunity to work without hindrance. Each driver was required to pay an “initial fee”, and then to transfer monthly a certain amount.

The victims turned to the police for help.

The Investigative unit of the MIA of Russia Inter-district Division “Krasnoperekopsky” initiated criminal proceedings on the grounds of crimes provided for in part 1, paragraph “d”, “c” part 2, paragraph “a” part 3 of Art. 163 “Extortion” of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The sanction of the article provides for a maximum penalty of up to 15 years of imprisonment.

During the operative-search activities, criminal investigation officers detained the suspects in the commission of these crimes. They were two local residents aged 33 and 41. The involvement of the offenders in committing 14 similar crimes was established. In addition, one of the suspects is suspected of committing a robbery. Both men were detained in accordance with Art. 91 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Russian Federation and are in custody. Measures are being taken to establish the involvement of suspects in committing other crimes.
