“Investigation unit of the General Investigation Administration of the MIA GA for the Irkutsk Region opened a criminal case on crime syndicate against 12 persons.
As a result of special investigative activities, officers of the Administration for Economic Security and Combatting the Corruption of the MIA GA for the Irkutsk Region and the Department of the Federal Security Service for the Irkutsk region together with investigators of the MIA GA for the Irkutsk Region as well as with forestry administration employees and backed up by Special Forces of the National Guard of the Russian Federation, suppressed the activities of an organized gang involved in illegal timber harvesting in the Nizhneudinsky District,” reported the Russian MIA official representative Irina Volk.
In total, criminal proceedings under this case `will be initiated against 28 persons, 6 of them were arrested, and the rest are under travel restrictions.
According to the investigators, a 36-year-old citizen of Almazay organized and controlled for a long period of time six brigades involved in illegal timber harvesting in the Nizhneudinsky District. The police conducted searches in a number of houses, single-ended sidings and places of timber processing and shipping. At the places of timber receipt and shipping, the police seized 2.5 thousands cubic meters of timber, six radio stations, several petrol-powered saws, cell phones, money presumably derived from the illegal activities, and other items important for the investigation.
The police officers inspected more than 100 square meters of the forest, where they found 8 trucks equipped with special tools for self-loading of cut down timber.
The investigators established that the detained persons were involved in 28 illegal cutting down episodes with a total damage exceeding 5 million rubles.
General Investigation Administration of the MIA GA for the Irkutsk region opened a criminal case for an offence under parts 1,2 Article 210 of the Russian Federation Criminal Code.
